WindRiver Linux is a modified version of Linux tuned and compiled by WindRiver, providing their own tools and compiler to develop, deploy, and operate robust, reliable, and secure embedded solutions running on a purpose-built Linux operating system. It is officially supported, which gives it an advantage for projects that require such services. Besides, Wind River is a founding member and contributor to the Yocto Project and regularly upstreams and contributes fixes and enhancements back into the project while building Yocto Project support into the next generation of the Wind River platform.
I have set up several embeddes sytems with different versions of Wind River Linux for PowerPC boards. This required building the kernel, having sysAdmin knowledge to set up and configure the OS once it was up and running, and fixing bugs in the code that would appear only for WR Linux and not for other ordinary Linuxes.
